We are pleased to announce that MuCover® Oral Wound Dressing, independently developed by MoleculeX, has recently received official notification from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (U.S. FDA) and obtained U.S. FDA 510(k) clearance as a medical device. This milestone provides MuCover® Oral Wound Dressing with an important regulatory foundation for entering the U.S. medical device market.
U.S. FDA 510(k) clearance is a key requirement for medical devices seeking market entry in the United States. The submission process involves the integration of multiple aspects, including product design, material safety, performance testing, biocompatibility, and regulatory strategy. For an early-stage medical device startup, this represents a significant challenge in terms of execution, resources, and cross-functional coordination.
MoleculeX completed an angel round financing of approximately USD 600K in its previous fundraising round, with the funds primarily allocated toward achieving U.S. medical device market clearance. With MuCover® Oral Wound Dressing successfully receiving U.S. FDA clearance, the company has completed this planned milestone and established a foundation for deeper collaboration with international medical device companies and distributors. This achievement is of significant importance to MoleculeX’s global market expansion and regulatory access strategy.
Oral mucosal wound care represents a long-standing clinical need in cancer supportive care, post-operative oral care, and oral ulcer management. In particular, oral mucositis is a common and quality-of-life-impacting side effect during cancer treatments such as chemotherapy for various cancer types, radiotherapy for head and neck cancer, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. In severe cases, oral mucositis may lead to pain, difficulty eating, reduced nutritional intake, hospitalization, and even treatment delay or interruption.
According to market research firm Spherical Insights & Consulting, the global market for radiation-induced oral mucositis treatment alone is expected to grow from USD 5.72 billion in 2025 to USD 9.45 billion by 2035. This indicates a substantial unmet need in oral mucositis and related mucosal wound care.
MuCover® Oral Wound Dressing, which has received U.S. FDA clearance, is an intraoral wound dressing independently developed by MoleculeX and designed specifically to address the needs of oral mucosal wound care. The oral environment is constantly exposed to moisture, saliva flow, friction from eating, and frequent oral movement, making it difficult for conventional products to remain in place on wound sites for an extended period of time.
MuCover® Oral Wound Dressing is among the intraoral wound care products with one of the longest claimed adhesion durations under the U.S. FDA 510(k) pathway. MuCover® can provide approximately 11 hours of protection, which is 2.75 times longer than the predicate device. Through its wet tissue-penetrating adhesion technology, MuCover® can stably adhere to the oral mucosal surface and form a physical protective barrier, helping reduce discomfort caused by external irritation and supporting patients in maintaining eating, speaking, and daily quality of life during wound care.
In recent years, we have continued to advance the development, clinical application, and international regulatory strategy of the MuCover® platform in the field of oral mucosal wound care. MuCover® Oral Wound Dressing has completed a pilot post-market clinical study in Taiwan, with results showing a positive trend. Moving forward, we will further evaluate the potential for larger-scale, multinational, multicenter clinical studies.
Looking ahead, we will continue to expand into cancer supportive care, dental and oral surgery post-operative care, and other mucosal wound management scenarios. We will also continue exploring new international market opportunities as we build a globally competitive oral mucosal wound care product platform.
📰 We are grateful to Economic Daily News, Meet Startup, and Global Bio & Investment Monthly for covering this milestone and sharing MoleculeX's story with a broader audience.
